Afghan Hound
The Afghan Hound was discovered by the western world in Afghanistan during the 19th century. The first Afghan Hounds were brought to England in the latter part of that century by British military personnel returning from the India-Afghanistan border wars. In its native land, the Afghan Hound was the hunting dog of the royal family, primarily a coursing hound, pursuing it quarry such as gazelles, snow leopards and hares. Followed by the huntsman on horseback, the Afghan Hound would either kill its prey or hold it at bay for the hunter. In this country, the Afghan Hound has enjoyed great success in the show ring while also excelling at lure coursing. In spite of its tendency to think for itself, it can also find occasional awards in the obedience ring and in agility competition.
